Essential Money-Saving Moving Guide

How to save money on your move

Money-Saving Tips for Moving

Advice from Boston professional movers how to  prepare to the move

Moving can be challenging. We want to simplify your move preparation and provide cost-effective and budget-saving advice.

  1. Plan your steps. Plan your moving process at least 4-6 weeks in advance. It’s a stress-reducing, cost-effective strategy.
  2. Declutter as soon as possible. Trust us; this process takes longer than anticipated. Avoid last-minute stress by starting early. A bonus: Decluttering can significantly reduce moving costs and save you money.
  3. Avoid Peak Times. Try to schedule your move during off-peak periods (mid-week, mid-month) for possible discounted rates.
  4. Hire a Reputable Mover. Choose a reliable moving company and keep attention to online reviews, their license, and insurance.
  5. Prepare an inventory list of your items. The list of items to move aids in organization and getting quotes from moving companies; if you have a full list of your belongings, it will take less time to get the estimates and less chance of getting surprising charges during moving.
  1. Better to have everything packed and avoid unpacked items. Remember, unpacked miscellaneous things will result in multiple trips to the truck with items carried in hands rather than loaded on the moving dollies. Every additional trip to the truck increases time and expense!
  2. Pack your things in the right way. Check out our packing tips page. The strategy is to pack well in advance. Pack similar items together, marking boxes with their respective room names.
  3. Avoid miscellaneous-sized boxes. Many boxes of different sizes complicate truck loading and require extra handling. Moving boxes of 3-4 standard sizes can significantly cut costs. It’s simpler for the moving team to stack and arrange uniform-sized rather than randomly sized boxes. You will get a great economy of labor time.
  4. Label boxes correctly. Label boxes on top and 2 sides with a dark marker to ensure they get to the right rooms—for instance, MBR for the master bedroom, LR for the living room, etc.
  5. Empty all drawers. Remove all the things from furniture drawers and leave drawers in. It is the safest way to protect your furniture structurally and saves time when the movers arrive. You won’twon’t have to empty the dressers at the last minute.
  1. Use vacuum sealing. For voluminous but lightweight items like clothes and pillows, vacuum sealing can be a game-changer. It not only reduces space consumption but also prevents creasing during the move.
  2. Avoid purchasing new food. If your move is scheduled for a week from now and you have a week’sweek’s worth of food left, prioritize consuming it. This approach saves you the trouble of packing and transporting food during the move.
  3. Make sure your pets and kids are watched after. It can be overwhelming to look after your little children and pets with all the boxes and furniture in the way. Hire a babysitter or ask your family or friends to watch small children and pets in another location to keep them safe and for you to keep focus on moving.
  4. Make some arrangements for the movers. If you don’t want to waste time and pay for extra hours on move day, make arrangements for the movers beforehand: unplug all appliances and remove contents out of them; this should include disconnecting gas or water line; reserve parking for the truck at both at origin and destination; reserve the elevator if necessary; check with the building’s management if they need the certificate of insurance from the mover.
